  • You must be at least 17 years of age for the admission in the current academic year
  • If you belong to India, you must qualify NEET entrance exam
  • If you belong to the general category, you must secure at least 50% in 12th in subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology. For the reserved category, the percentage is 40%
  • You must have a valid visa and passport
  • If you are an Indian, you must carry MCI’s eligibility criteria certificate

Documents required for MBBS course

When you apply for your preferred medical college online, make sure you have all the required documents in soft copy. You will have to submit them when you apply. The required documents are

  • Your birth certificate

  • Mark sheet and passing certificate for 10th and 12th board exams
  • NEET scorecard

Student visa for Ukraine

Before you apply for the student visa, make sure you fulfil the pre-visa requirement. According to this, you must finalize a Ukrainian medical college first. It is because you can’t apply for a student visa unless you have the invitation letter from the chosen university. If you haven’t received it, you must wait for the letter to arrive. If you have already received the invitation letter, you may collect the hard copy of the following documents

  • First-hand copy of the invitation letter
  • Mark sheet and certificate of 12th legalized by the Education Ministry in your country
  • Authentic copy of the birth certificate

  • An original certificate to prove that you are HIV negative
  • Financial statements to prove that you are capable to support your tuition fee and living expenses in Ukraine. You must have a minimum balance of $3,000 in your bank account
  • 12 passport size photographs

After you apply for the visa, it may take a month for approval. Moreover, the consulate officer may call you for clarification on your profile. Make sure you attend the interview and answer the questions of the officer truthfully with confidence. Any fake or incorrect answers may lead to rejection of the visa that may delay your admission.

Education 

The Ukrainian constitution gives access to free education to all of its citizens. The students must complete their general secondary education in state schools. To promote education among students, free higher education is granted in the state and communal educational institutions.

Ukraine’s higher education system is administered by the national, municipal and self-governing bodies. According to UNESCO and the UN, the structure of Ukraine’s education system is built in concurrence to the education system of developed countries.

It may surprise you that Ukraine has approx. 800 institutions for higher education. This eastern European country is also known to produce the fourth-largest number of postgraduates in Europe. To ensure that the maximum number of people can pursue higher education, the authorities also provide scholarship programs. If you aim for such programs, make sure you aim for the highest grades. It is because recently there has been an increment of 25% in the scholarship for the highest grades.

Universities in Ukraine offers bachelors and master degree for higher education. The bachelor’s program has a duration of 4 years and the master’s program is for 1 or 2 years. The quality in each of the programs is maintained as per the Bologna process.

Bologna process

It is a process adopted by European countries to measure the standards and quality of higher education. The fundamentals of this process are well-described by its cyclic procedure also known as European Credits Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) that is explained as

  • First cycle: To complete the first cycle, you need to complete your bachelor’s degree. For the same, you need 180-240 ECTS credits i.e. at least 60 credits each academic year
  • Second cycle: For the second cycle, you need 60-120 ECTS credits i.e. at least 60 credits each academic year of the master’s program
  • Third cycle: The final stage of the cycle is for the doctoral degree. It doesn’t have any prescribed range of ECTS credits. It may vary based on the country or university
The curriculum of medical colleges 

As mentioned above, the duration of the MBBS course in Ukraine is of 6 years. The initial three years are based on theoretical knowledge and the rest are based on clinical exposure. To ensure that students keep up with the course, the universities conduct regular exams. If you are Indian, you will have a privileged part attached to it. It is because Indian doctors in Ukraine will help you prepare for the MCI screening test in India. 

1st-year syllabus: During the initial year, you will study anatomy, medical biology, medical chemistry, histology, and local language mainly. Apart from these, you will also learn other topics like physical training, fundamentals of psychology, politology, etc.

2nd-year syllabus: The following year includes topics from philosophy, human anatomy, embryology, microbiology, patient’s care, general surgery, etc. Some other subjects taught are medical computer science, physiology, bio-organic chemistry, etc.

3rd-year syllabus: The third-year has subjects like immunology, pathomorphology, propaedeutic, hygiene and ecology, radiology, fundamentals of bioethics and biosafety. Other subjects for the same year are nurse practice, local language classes, pharmacology, etc.

4th-year syllabus: The next year’s syllabus includes subjects like internal medicine, neurology, paediatrics, surgery, social medicine and healthcare system, etc. It also includes subjects like gynaecology, ophthalmology, urology, psychiatry, forensic medicine, medical science of law, etc.

5th-year syllabus: The fifth-year starts with a previous year course internal medicine and is stretched up to infectious diseases, epidemiology, oncology, clinical pharmacology, surgery, traumatology, etc. Some of the other courses involved are children’s surgery, clinical immunology and allergology, anaesthesiology and intensive therapy, neurosurgery, radiation medicine, etc.

6th-year syllabus: The final year allows you to choose subjects from optional courses. apart from these, some crucial subjects for this semester are internal medicine, paediatrics and children’s infectious disease, surgery, gynaecology, general practice, hygiene and ecology, social medicine, organization and economics of Public Health Service, and oncology.

MCI Screening syllabus 

Topics covered in medical colleges of Ukraine for MCI screening test are anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, otorhinolaryngology, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, community medicine, general surgery, anaesthesiology, orthopaedics, radiodiagnosis, medicine, psychiatry, dermatology, STD, and radiotherapy.

Student’s assessment 

As discussed earlier, examinations take place every year to check your performance. If you want to get promoted to the next year, you must clear the evaluation process successively each year. The evaluation in between the semester is done in three process

  • Multiple choice questions (MCQ)
  • Written exams
  • Oral exams

The evaluation is done through the following criteria of grades

  • 5: Very good
  • 4.5: More than good
  • 4: Good
  • 3.5: Quite good
  • 3: Satisfactory
  • 2: Fail

For some courses, the evaluation doesn’t include grades. It is either pass or fail. The final year examinations and the score will decide your fate.

The state final examinations based on the syllabus occur in two stages

  • Practical proficiency (Exam on clinical disciplines that takes place at a patient’s bed)
  • Theoretical proficiency

you fail in the final examinations, you will have to re-appear for the same year. If by any chance, you fail to appear for the examination without a valid reason, you will be marked failed. It will also be catalogued in your records before you graduate. It may hamper your profile as a doctor when you apply for jobs. Therefore, to perform well in the duration of the entire course, you must score at least satisfactory in the evaluation exams.

Course almanac

Each academic year is categorized into two semesters. The duration of the first semester is from mid-September until the last week of January. The duration of the second semester is from the first week of February till mid-July. Despite the same, international students can enter the country until the first week of November. Whereas, pre-medical applicants may enter up till February.

There are 5 working days for the students. At the weekend, students are independent to explore the city. The classes start at 8 in the morning and finish at 4 in the evening. In the entire working week, students must attend 36 hours of lecture classes.

July and August are the months for summer vacation. In this period, students have the accessibility to travel to CIS and other European countries.
