MBBS counseling & acquiring a seat
The objective of this article is to educate students about the MBBS counselling procedure and the right approach to grab a seat rather than losing one.
If you have seized a score of 550+ and scored well as per your preferred government medical college or university, you can easily acquire a seat in medical college. All you need to do is prepare for it and you are sorted.
Whereas, for someone whose rank is less than 550, getting a government medical college is a no-no situation. It doesn’t mean that your dream to be a doctor ends here. You still have a chance, if you understand the mechanics ofcounselling in MBBS.
This can be done if you have a backup plan, done enough research and strategically plan your next move. For the accurate execution and functioning of your plan, you must know the stages of counselling. The following article will advise you regarding the same.
Before you appear for NEET Counselling, you must register yourself on the website of the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). While registering, pay the registration fee based on the type of university. For reference, acknowledge the table below

How to get a seat?
Acquiring a seat during MBBS Counselling isn’t only a matter of good NEET score, it is also about strategic planning and applying logic.
To understand better, let’s assume that you reside in Delhi and you have scored less than 520. In such scenario, you must have a backup plan for getting admission into a medical college.
- If your score is between 520 to 450, instead of giving up the seat, aim for a college that offers less fee structure and is well-recognized. You may also look for colleges in your state as well as open states that allows admission for non-domicile students
- For score less than 450, the options are available from Private or Deemed university. As mentioned above, look for options in your state as well as open states
- If your NEET score is less than 300 to just qualified, you must activate your brain to fullest. Here, you are left with lesser options. You can apply for the few seats in Private or deemed colleges. You may also apply for the Management or NRI Quota, if applicable. A student can apply for the management quota only if he/she has opted for it previously while registering for the counselling. You must choose your options wisely. Another most important thing during the counselling is to get a seat in the first round. This is because, the more you wait, the fewer options are left in the end.
Upgrading the seat
Apart from getting a seat, upgrading the medical seat is also an option. In such a situation, the student will have to give up the seat he/she has acquired and can apply for a better or another opportunity. But, before you apply for the upgrade, make sure you have the potential of acquiring a seat; or else, you may end up losing both.
